Section 4.03

Google and YouTube

Google

Google was founded in 1995 by two Stanford University graduate students, Sergey Brin and Larry Page. Brin and Page began working together on a research project in 1996 that would eventually become the Google search engine we know today.

Google’s competitors in the early years of operation were AltaVista, Yahoo, Excite, and Lycos; however, within a few years, Google had established itself as the dominant search engine. People now say “Googled it” instead of searching for information on a search engine because the name has become a verb meaning to conduct a Web search.

“If it isn’t on Google, it doesn’t exist.” ~Jimmy Wales

  2. Enter the word or phrase using keywords in the search box.
  3. Then search. Review the search results.
  4. Choose what satisfies your search.

Activity 4.30

YOUTUBE

YouTube is a video-sharing website based in the United States. Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim, all former PayPal employees, founded the platform in February 2005. YouTube was purchased by Google in November 2006 for US$1.65 billion, and it is currently one of Google’s subsidiaries.

YouTube is a platform, a distribution vehicle“ -Steve Chen

YouTube is a free video-sharing website that makes watching online videos simple. You can even make your own videos and post them to enjoy with others. YouTube is now one of the most popular websites on the Internet, with over 6 billion hours of video watched each month.

A YouTuber, also known as a YouTube celebrity, YouTube content creator, or YouTube personality, is a sort of filmmaker or comedian who creates videos for the video-sharing website YouTube, with larger networks occasionally supporting them. Corporate sponsors pay for product placement in their clips or the development of online videos for some YouTube personalities.

What is a VLOG?

Vlog stands for a video blog or video log, and refers to a type of blog where most or all of the content is in a video format. Vlog posts consist of creating a video of yourself where you talk on a particular subject such as reporting or reviewing a product or an event.

What is the difference between a BLOG and a VLOG?

The difference between a blog and a vlog is that a blog is a written piece of communication whereas a vlog is created in a video format. Both can be created for an audience by an individual who is trying to create a personal connection with an audience. And often they both share insights into a person’s thoughts, ideas, or experiences.
